As we say goodbye to the long winter and welcome the spring, I am optimistic about the economy and the positive movement in the materials handling industry.  Advance is experiencing some of the economic recovery with record sales in 2013 and continued growth in 2014.

The RMI has recently released the new guideline "Assessment and Repair or Replacement of Damaged Rack."  This guideline is the industry's first effort to provide a real world process to follow to ensure that rack repair work is performed safely.  As chair of the committee that wrote the document, I came to appreciate how much care is required to perform rack repair properly.  My major takeaway from the nearly yearlong development effort is that it is absolutely necessary to perform any repair work under the supervision of a highly qualified engineer.

As always, please contact us if we can help you with your warehouse storage needs.

Sincerely,
John Krummell, President/CEO Advance Storage Products

PUSHBACK RACK OPTIONS AND DEMONSTRATION

For use in high-cube storage facilities, pushback systems provide superior selectivity and cost benefits compared to other deep storage alternatives.  Available in 2 to 6-deep options, pushback provides storage for FIFO (first in/first out) applications.

  Rack Repair

The following are options for repairing damaged rack:

-- Replacement: when original or updated engineering documentation is available, replacement of damaged components with identical parts from the original manufacturer may be an option (the rack system will still need to meet capacity requirements)

-- Rack Repair Kits:  depending on the situation, the damaged section of an upright can be replaced with a pre-engineered rack repair kit, which is typically bolted or welded in place and anchored to the floor)

-- Welded Field Repair:  in some cases, welded repair may be done in the field (all work would have to be in compliance with all appropriate codes)

Make sure to consult with a qualified engineer before performing any rack repair.

  RACK SAFETY

   Rack Safety Issues

The following rack conditions may lead to potential   unsafe conditions in any warehouse with a rack system:

  • Overloaded rack--any changes made to a rack system must have appropriate engineering supervision and approval drawings verifying the load bearing capacity
  • Damaged rack--any damage to a rack system will reduce the capacity of the system
  • Unsupervised rack repair--any repair or replacement work needs to be performed by qualified professionals working to RMI design codes
  • Mix and match reconfigurations--if product from 2 different suppliers is to be combined, be sure that proper approval is provided from both manufacturers or a qualified engineer
  • Misapplication (pallet and product)--rack systems are designed for specific pallet and load combinations--be sure to have any changes to pallets or load application approved by your supplier
